Am I everything you need? You better Dumpster Dive with me!
If you did not get that garbage fire of a Backstreet Boys reference, congratulations, you did not have to suffer in high school like some of us did. For the rest of you, have fun getting that out of your head! If this is your first time checking out this series, do not fret, it is only our second run of it, I will go over the rules REAL QUICK for you again:
- Team Rankstar’s own, Sifudanny, challenges people on his stream (lovingly called students) to use a card that is not very prevalent in the meta at the current stages and not necessarily good and to build a deck around it.
- All submissions get to compete on his stream LIVE to see who gets first place.
- There are two ways to win: Have the best win ratio, or, have the spiciest, most fun deck.
Sifudanny designed this challenge to let players challenge themselves into using cards they normally wouldn’t think to use and also to see if someone can stumble upon something that is actually really good. This challenge encourages deck building and different strategies and that is something every CCG needs more of. Also, we at Team Rankstar like to give away PRIZES. So there was that too.
So let us jump in to this steaming, festering heap and see what we have. If you would rather watch Sifudanny instead of reading my droning on and on, get off my article and watch the Video instead. ANYWHO, This challenge was around Brenn, Chronicler of Ages. A hero promo card that showed up during Set 3 with some cool lore, but not a terribly strong effect. He had some hype the first couple of weeks after release but he did not stand up to the test of time. Some entries tried to ramp out Great-Kiln Titan, didn’t work so well. Another entrant tried to build around Invoke the Waystones (another nominee for Dumpster Decking later on). Obviously, just bleh. We saw some nostalgic players trying to cheat out some big Flame Blasts, NOPE. also of note, some others tried to capitalize on activating Marshal Ironthorn and Talir, Unbound early. Notable concepts, not-so-notable results. Jeten’s deck won the contest with a 4-1 ranked win ratio by cheating multiple Thunderstrike Dragons in a single turn. so it was not that bad! Let’s take a peak at this List:
2 Excavate (Set1 #71)
3 Permafrost (Set1 #193)
4 Seek Power (Set1 #408)
3 Torch (Set1 #8)
4 Brenn, Chronicler of Ages (Set3 #303)
2 Equivocate (Set1003 #21)
2 Find the Way (Set1 #513)
2 Kaleb’s Choice (Set2 #188)
2 Purify (Set2 #176)
4 Second Sight (Set1 #207)
4 Hailstorm (Set1003 #11)
2 Wisdom of the Elders (Set1 #218)
4 Kaleb, Reborn (Set3 #255)
2 Staff of the Arch-Magister (Set3 #39)
4 Thunderstrike Dragon (Set1 #243)
4 Moment of Creation (Set2 #185)
2 Molot & Nakova (Set2 #199)
3 Fire Sigil (Set1 #1)
2 Primal Sigil (Set1 #187)
2 Time Sigil (Set1 #63)
2 Crest of Fury (Set3 #266)
2 Crest of Impulse (Set3 #251)
2 Crest of Wisdom (Set3 #261)
4 Seat of Fury (Set0 #53)
4 Seat of Impulse (Set0 #54)
4 Seat of Wisdom (Set0 #63)
Right out of the gate, you can see that Jeten went with a controlly sort of shell around Brenn. Who doesn’t love Equivocate and Purify, am I right? Kaleb’s Choice is a fast spell so it does not tend to help Brenn too often, still a decent card though. Second Sight, coupled with Brenn and Thunderstrike Dragon is an amazing combination we have seen in other decks. It is accented really well by Brenn if he is charged up and you have another sight or Wisdom of the Elders in hand to draw your dragons back right away. Hailstorm was a card everyone involved was a bit skeptical about, since it kills Brenn, but you still get his affect even if he dies in the process. YAY! We learned something new! Because we are in Primal, Jeten could not resist putting in Kaleb, Reborn, plus it combos pretty well with Brenn anyway. While Sifudanny did not like the inclusion of Staff of the Arch-Magister, I personally applaud the attempt to go into true meme territory. Quiz time… When you play a deck with a bunch of spells and the ability to ramp and you are in Fire and Time, what card do you play as another finisher? Huzzah! Moment of Creation.
In theory, a very well thought out deck. Jeten did a great job bringing us something fun to talk about and play. Not to mention, he did well enough to impress Sifudanny and win himself some phat loots. To see the deck in all of it’s glory and in action and listen to me riff with Sifudanny, check out the second Video where we hit the ladder and make some tweaks.
Once you have checked those out and had some fun, take a look at your collection. Drop us a line. Let us know what a great card would be for the next edition of Dumpster Decking.
