Gwent: Journey

Earlier this year on the Merchants of Novigrad podcast Jason Slama, Game Director for Gwent, teased that along with two expansions this year, we’d be getting something else. Something he referred to simply as “special”, and he was 100% right. Welcome to Gwent: Journey. Witcher 3 has finally reached its true potential. Gwent is now officially a card game with RPG elements  Best of all? Geralt has FINALLY arrived as a leader! Gwent: Journey has launched; it’s a battle pass-type feature

Gwent Team Thoughts on April 2020 Patch Changes

Here at Team Rankstar, we’ve taken a little time to process and think about the changes coming with the new patch we should see on April 2nd. While we don’t know all of the changes, we heard about a number of them on the most recent episode of the Merchants of Novigrad podcast with Jason Slama, game director for Gwent. So without further adieu, here’s a collection of thoughts from some of our team members! TheaBeasty I’m very glad that

The origins of: Matta Hu’uri

PROLOGUE Many of you know Matta Hu’uri from Gwent – a Tutor Card with following ability: Matta’s Card has been introduced in the most recent Expansion for Gwent called Merchants of Ofir – suggesting exotic roots of this card. Why exotic you ask? According to a scholar from Northern Kingdoms – Markus Hohlenberg, Ofir is a land of vast steppes, forbidding mountains, untouched wildernesses and crystal-clear lakes and it is populated by horses, camels, elephants, tigers and cobras. The climate is said to be much warmer

TheBoxer’s Corner: Who’s the Beatdown III: Endgames and Resource Allocation

Hello and welcome back to TheBoxer’s Corner! Today I’m going to give you my take on the classic question “who’s the beatdown?” First asked by Mike Flores and then Zvi Moshowitz. The theory states that victory is determined by correct assessment of roles in a match-up. Flores focuses on the more traditional idea of one deck being the aggressor and the being control. Moshowitz abstracts this idea by focusing on the idea of inevitability and what happens if the game

Deckbuilding Principles/How I learned to stop building trash and love the provision system

This articles was written by Johaggis and edited by Sevenzh. Hey Gwent Community, seeing as data gathering has become more difficult and the snapshots are on hiatus, I figured it might be helpful to share some advice on how to make a deck that doesn’t attempt to pull you to rank 31. I’ll be going over some general principles for making a deck, which will hopefully help you build your own! For those of you who don’t know me, I’m

Skycrag Yetis in-depth Deck Tech A guest article from Alison of TQG It’s no secret that Yetis have fallen out of favor recently. The recent dominance of Saber-Tooth Prideleader decks has given x/1 aggro decks a headache. While aggro was still very much a viable strategy, it tended towards overstatted units and combat tricks (eg. Combrei Aggro) rather than going extremely fast and flooding the board, because that strategy was just really bad against Prideleader. But that was all changed

Lights Out – Skycrag Dragons Double Feature

I’ve recently made a new friend, and his name is Acedonis. This dragon buddy does it all – he dodges a lot of removal, flies over the enemy to achieve his Mastery, and brings the party with Cinder Clutch. He’s so much fun that I’ve been playing Skycrag Dragons in both constructed formats! Throne 4 Blazing Salvo (Set8 #1) 4 Cinder Clutch (Set1007 #1) 4 Oni Dragonsmith (Set1003 #2) 4 Torch (Set1 #8) 4 Provoke the Dragons (Set8 #92) 4

MTGA Budget Deck // Simic Flash

Simic Flash is both a much loved and much-hated deck in Magic: The Gathering. It’s loved for the fact that you can quite literally shut down your opponent’s game plan by countering all the spells they cast, which is also why it can be infuriating to play against – hence the hated part. This budget build is missing some of the big cards, mainly Nissa, Who Shakes The World. But even with some key cards missing the core game plan

MTGA Budget Deck // Azorius Flyers

This Azorius Flyers list can be a very strong midrange deck. The idea is to play a lot of flying creatures to simply swing over you’re opponent. Big mid-game cards like Archon of Sun’s Grace and Empyrean Eagle allow you to get the game won before your opponent can have any tangible answers. Deck aim/playstyle The aim of this deck is simple, build up a big mid-game flying creature presence and swing at your opponent’s face. You really want to

Lights Out – Cards That Excite Me From Echoes of Eternity

I love new set week! Echoes of Eternity is an extremely powerful set, full of build-arounds and obviously powerful cards. There are tons of new ideas being tossed round on reddit, discord, and the ladder, and they will take some time to refine, so instead of talking about decklists, today I’m going to be talking about the cards from EoE that excite me the most. Kato, Arena Herald Kato is like Spark Hatcher, only you get another 0/1 if you

MTGA Budget Deck // Selesnya Enchantments

This budget build of Selesnya Enchantments looks to get Setessan Champion on the board as early as possible and basically make her huge by attaching enchantments to her. Not only can she become an absolutely massive mid-game threat, but the continuous card draw she offers is incredibly good. Other cards like Destiny Spinner and Nyx Herald also offer some good mid-game presence, especially Destiny Spinner’s ability to create an X/X land where X is the number of enchantments you control,

TheBoxer’s Corner: Building Under the Influence

Hello and welcome back to TheBoxer’s Corner! Today I’m going to talk about power bases in Expedition. But before talking specifics I need to go over some general power base theory. There was an idea, to bring together a group of remarkable cards that when we needed them could

MTGA Budget Deck // Orzhov Lifegain

This budget build of the Orzhov lifegain deck looks to use the Ajani Pridemates and Bloodthirsty Aerialists in tandem with cards like Healer Hawk and Kunoros to build a pretty substantial mid-game threat, in both the air and on the board. Boosting this build with cards like Heliod, Sun-Crown, a playset of Murderous Riders and a playset of Dawn of Hope obviously take the deck out of the ‘budget’ zone, but can really help the deck offer more of a

Lights Out – Endgame

Going into the Quarterly Championships, Argenport was the deck to beat in Expedition. Its main weakness felt like 8 sweeper decks (Four each of Shen-Ra Speaks and Ageworn Vestige) with Xulta Arcanum. These decks generally come in 4-faction forms that are base TJP or TJS with a single Fire Sigil to find with Seek Power or Amber Acolyte and have Arcanum as their only Fire card. Neither third faction seemed to add that much in exchange for the decreased consistency.

Once Upon a Time: Overrunning Portland with Modern Elves

On the Friday of MagicFest Portland, I watched my teammate Devon (@arbitraryarmor) take down the Standard PTQ with Jund Sacrifice. At some point that afternoon, I jokingly told him that I’d make it back-to-back Team Rankstar wins the next day in the Modern PTQ. My expectations for the weekend were relatively low given how busy I was leading up to the event; with final exams looming over the month, I decided to trust in my experience and sleeve up Elves,
