Brawl Discord, Artisan Event, A 3/3 Elk, MCQW Decks

The News

Goodbye Brawl

We hardly knew ye… As the timer wound down to zero this morning I couldn’t help but feel like I’d lost a friend. Truly, Brawl has been a welcome relief from a stale Standard meta. Starting next week, the Brawl queue will only be available on Wednesdays.

To combat this, u/rsMerchant has opened up a Brawl discord server for discussing the game mode, deck lists, and finding casual Brawl games. As of writing this there are over 1000 users and nearly constant matches being made. Play Brawl and let the Arena team know you want it as a permanent game mode!

Artisan Event

Festival of the Fae: Chapter 1 – Artisan

Similar to the plane-cation events that happened after the release of Core 20, Festival of the Fae is a multi-week series of events that award both Mastery experience and card styles. Unlike the free to play plane-cation events, these events do have an entry fee of 2500 gold or 500 gems.

The first week of the event features Artisan as the format, and I’ve got a few deck ideas down below.

In this Magic: The Gathering Arena format, all cards must be either common or uncommon rarity. Artisan events may use either Standard or Historic format legality for cards.

Banned Cards:

Other than that, the usual rules for Constructed decks apply:

  • Minimum of 60 cards in the main deck
(Maximum 250 cards for main decks)
  • Up to 15 cards in your sideboard, if used
  • Include no more than 4 copies of any individual card in your main deck and sideboard combined (except basic lands)

A card must be available at common or uncommon rarity on Magic: The Gathering Arena for it to be legal in this format. If a version of a particular card is only available as a rare/mythic rare on Magic: The Gathering Arena, it is not considered legal for this format (e.g.Narcomoeba).

Event Record: Rewards up to 5 wins, losses are not counted

  • 1 Win: Merchant of the Vale Showcase card style
  • 2 Wins: Beanstalk Giant Showcase card style
  • 3 Wins: Order of Midnight Showcase card style
  • 4 Wins: Giant Killer Showcase card style
  • 5 Wins: Brazen Borrower Showcase card style

In a turn of events that nobody saw coming (/s) Oko has taken over the Standard meta. Last weekend’s MCQW on Arena saw 66.7% of the day two decks featuring Oko. The card has become the focus of ire from the bottom to the top of the MTG community.

I’ll be the first to admit that I was optimistic after the banning of Field of the Dead, and I was wrong. The meta has gotten worse, and the blame lies solely with Oko. It has gotten so bad that Standard events are being replaced with other formats throughout the higher level tournament scene. SCG Tour has switched their invitational from Standard/Modern to Pioneer/Modern. Nerd Rage Gaming had to change their $5000 tournament from Standard to Pioneer this weekend after only two people signed up.

People don’t want to play Standard right now. Thankfully we’ve had Brawl this past week, and Festival of the Fae to look forward to. Thought I wonder what the Arena numbers will show outside of those events. This is purely conjecture, but I’m willing to bet the Standard queue has taken quite a hit because of the broken meta.

I would put my money on at least one banning November 18th, if not more.

The Decks

This week I want to look at a few non-Oko decks that did well in the MCQW, and a few decks I’m going to take into the Festival of Fae event this weekend.

MCQW Azorius Control

from: Edmvyrus

4 Brazen Borrower (ELD) 39
1 Gadwick, the Wizened (ELD) 48
2 Agent of Treachery (M20) 43
3 Dovin's Veto (WAR) 193
2 Mystical Dispute (ELD) 58
4 Absorb (RNA) 151
4 Time Wipe (WAR) 223
4 Chemister's Insight (GRN) 32
2 Mass Manipulation (RNA) 42
3 Prison Realm (WAR) 26
4 Teferi, Time Raveler (WAR) 221
4 Plains (ANA) 56
6 Island (ANA) 57
2 Castle Ardenvale (ELD) 238
3 Castle Vantress (ELD) 242
4 Fabled Passage (ELD) 244
4 Hallowed Fountain (RNA) 251
4 Tranquil Cove (M20) 259

4 Aether Gust (M20) 42
3 Glass Casket (ELD) 15
2 Narset, Parter of Veils (WAR) 61
2 Sorcerous Spyglass (ELD) 233
1 Mystical Dispute (ELD) 58
1 Devout Decree (M20) 13
1 Finale of Glory (WAR) 12
1 Realm-Cloaked Giant (ELD) 26

Let’s start with the Azorius Control list that went 10-0 day 1. In the Oko dominated meta, Teferi, Time Raveler declines in popularity. And when Teferi, Time Raveler declines in popularity, he can take over events. If Teferi is popular, playing traditional counterspell-driven control is nearly impossible. But if you don’t ever expect to see an opponent with a Teferi, you’re free to play all of the counterspells you want. That’s exactly what Edmvyrus did. Being a fan of traditional Azorius Control, I absolutely love that this metagame call paid off finishing 14-2 and earning Emdvyrus 13th place with an invite to MCVII.

MCQW Izzet Flash

from Frubsquared

4 Brineborn Cutthroat (M20) 50
4 Bonecrusher Giant (ELD) 115
4 Brazen Borrower (ELD) 39
3 Gadwick, the Wizened (ELD) 48
4 Opt (ELD) 59
2 Shock (M20) 160
1 Essence Capture (RNA) 37
1 Negate (M20) 69
3 Quench (RNA) 48
3 Ionize (GRN) 179
3 Mystical Dispute (ELD) 58
3 Ral's Outburst (WAR) 212
4 Mountain (MI) 0
8 Island (MI) 0
2 Castle Vantress (ELD) 242
3 Fabled Passage (ELD) 244
4 Temple of Epiphany (M20) 253
4 Steam Vents (GRN) 257

1 Negate (M20) 69
2 Crackling Drake (GRN) 163
2 Sorcerous Spyglass (ELD) 233
4 Aether Gust (M20) 42
1 Beacon Bolt (GRN) 154
2 Lava Coil (GRN) 108
3 Flame Sweep (M20) 139

This was an interesting deck that after making it to day two fell on it’s face going 0-3. But I won’t fault Frubsquared for that. They made what looks to be a very fun deck, utilizing the flashy blue spells, a few burn bits, and Gadwick, the Wizened at the top end.

This whole deck has quite a bit of synergy with the ability to bounce the Gadwick with Brazen Borrower and refill your hand later in the game. (Edit: I’m an idiot and was thinking of a line I made in Brawl using Teferi, and not Brazen Borrower) This has a fairly decent matchup with Oko-based decks, so if you’re looking for something a bit different to ladder with, this might be it.

ARTISAN Dimir Control

3 Nightveil Predator (GRN) 191
2 Disfigure (M20) 95
4 Quench (RNA) 48
4 Discovery // Dispersal (GRN) 223
4 Thought Erasure (GRN) 206
4 Drown in the Loch (ELD) 188
3 Tyrant's Scorn (WAR) 225
4 Cry of the Carnarium (RNA) 70
2 Covetous Urge (ELD) 207
3 Disinformation Campaign (GRN) 167
3 Narset, Parter of Veils (WAR) 61
8 Swamp (ELD) 258
8 Island (ELD) 257
4 Dismal Backwater (M20) 245
4 Dimir Guildgate (GRN) 245

I built this deck mostly for my desire to play with Covetous Urge. It’s a really interesting discard/steal your stuff spell that can end the game quickly if your opponent is playing beefy stuff. Like most control, you’re just trying to limit your opponent’s threats early, and bring a big late game. Or with Covetous Urge, bring your opponent’s big late game.

It’s worth noting, I think Cry of the Carnarium is one of the most important cards in the format. Be very aware of it when building your list. You will get blown out by it if your whole team is small, and I expect many teams to be made up of a bunch of 2/2 creatures.

ARTISAN Golgari Adventures

4 Edgewall Innkeeper (ELD) 151
4 Smitten Swordmaster (ELD) 105
4 Flaxen Intruder (ELD) 155
3 Beanstalk Giant (ELD) 149
4 Order of Midnight (ELD) 99
4 Rosethorn Acolyte (ELD) 174
4 Foulmire Knight (ELD) 90
2 Curious Pair (ELD) 150
4 Status // Statue (GRN) 230
3 Lucky Clover (ELD) 226
11 Forest (ELD) 269
9 Swamp (ELD) 260
4 Jungle Hollow (M20) 248

Speaking of being blown out by Cry of the Carnarium, this deck will struggle against decks running it. On the other hand, if you’re paired up against nearly anyone else, expect to draw a lot of cards and drain a lot of life. This is one of the most fun decks I’ve played in testing. When it works, it works really well, often flooding the board with both lands and creatures. Then a few big drains from Curry Favor can seal the win.

The Wrap Up

That’s all for this week. Standard is miserable, but I’m thankful for the events lined up over the next couple of weeks. Brawl was amazing, and Festival of the Fae at least gets us away from Standard. I think I’ll be trying to push my rank back to Mythic in December, since it’s the only time of year I have enough hours to play. I’ll be setting that run up this month by getting as high as I can over Thanksgiving week. I don’t look forward to laddering until the 18th.
