Learn how TRS’ MTG player ArbitraryArmor tuned Jund Food to take him through to the PT!
On the Friday of MagicFest Portland, I watched my teammate Devon (@arbitraryarmor) take down the Standard PTQ with Jund Sacrifice. At some point that afternoon, I jokingly told him that I’d make it back-to-back Team Rankstar wins the next day in the Modern PTQ. My expectations for the weekend were relatively low given how busy I was leading up to the event; with final exams looming over the month, I decided to trust in my experience and sleeve up Elves,

Some really exciting things have been happening in the CCG world this past week! Aphelion and Magikarp had the pleasure of spending time with Direwolf Digital at PAX this weekend, getting some awesome info as well as spoilers for the upcoming set 7: “The Flame of Xulta”! Also, several new MTG sets were announced, cataloguing what we can expect next year, as well as plenty of spoilers for the upcoming “Throne of Eldraine” set! In MTG news, Stoneforge Mystic was
Throne of Eldraine Previews, Brawl on Arena, Historic, Red Deck Wins The News Throne of Eldraine Preview Season The preview season for Throne of Eldraine officially kicked off this week bringing us several interesting cards and new mechanics, the most interesting of which is the Adventure mechanic. With this mechanic, you can cast the card from your hand as the Adventure card. In the case of Lovestruck Beast, The Adventure spell is Heart’s Desire, which is a Sorcery that creates
All I have to say is don’t let your memes be dreams I guess. I’m not sure how many times I tweeted with the hashtag #freeSFM, but it happened at least once a month for a long time. I mentioned in my two previous articles that the modern format needed a change, and I assumed that The R&D team would simply ban Hogaak, and let the format go from there. What we got was, well….more than that: PIC HOGAAK BAN
It has been a very nice end of the month here at Team Ransktar, with the announcement of our newest Hearthstone tournament: Brawlers of Uldum! On top of that, we have our Rankstar Arena Rumble just around the corner next month, and we could not be more excited for these events. Be sure to preregister as they will likely fill up! If you make it to PAX West this weekend, be sure to drop by the Inked Gaming booth for
Omniscience draft isn’t magic. You start with 3 cards and the format removes mana cost, which is perhaps the most essential and defining quality that Magic has. Past Omnisicence drafts, especially Dominaria, enabled turn 1 kills, which are perhaps the dumbest thing that can happen in Magic. And one of the funnest things I’ve ever done on Magic Arena. Because veiled within the dumbness of the format is a curious and refreshing awesomeness. A “what if” that bears fruit. For

Hey everyone! My name is Tim, otherwise known Tchamber5 in the queues! Today, I wanted to talk about some decks that are not only super sweet, but that I think will be very competitively viable after the Banned and restricted announcement on the 26th of August. What decks could I be talking about? Snow decks of course! I have been really impressed with the subtly excellent synergies that were released with Modern Horizons. Namely, there are a few key pay-off
The M20 meta has been dominated by non-interactive lists such as Scapeshift and Nexus. Other popular decks are Green/x midrange decks looking to drop large creatures and Planeswalkers. Aggro isn’t completely dead, but mono white has fallen in favor of Vampires, which is a solid list with some powerful cards, but also utilizes some weaker cards for synergies (territory that aggro rarely treads). Mono red isn’t a terrible choice but isn’t the menace it once was. With all of this
This past weekend, MTG: Arena held a Mythic Championship Qualifier Weekend (further referred as MCQW) which was comprised of all players who finished top 1,000 during the War of the Spark season (past 3 months) in either Constructed or Limited. I was able to play in this event after qualifying in June through Constructed playing mostly Bant Ramp, but today I’d like to talk about the deck I went 6-2 with this weekend, almost making day 2: Bant Scapeshift. Magic’s Standard meta exists in an environment that is in annual flux. As new sets are introduced, older expansions are pushed out the back door. Standard rotation ensures the meta has a scheduled expiry, keeping things relatively fresh. Though many popular cards will soon vanish from the format, the decks they populated are not necessarily doomed to disappear. Here are five rotation proof decks you can count on. Izzet Phoenix Izzet hit a sweet spot during the Ravnica block, scoring
I Played in an MCQ last weekend. It’s the first time that I have played competitive paper magic in a long time, and I had a blast, though I have some musings about the format. Modern is in a really weird spot right now. It’s being dominated by some completely insane decks. Hogaak is the true menace of the format, the likes that I have not seen in a long time. Even though there have been bannings in the format

Standard Rotation looms, and cards are slated to disappear with the release of Throne of Eldraine. Though there are a slew of cards we won’t shed a single tear for, there are some favourites that we will be sad to see go. Here are five cards that we’ll be lighting a candle for when Standard Rotation occurs.
