Meta Monday – Calderan Cradle Dragon Control

I was not able to catch any of the ETS streams this past weekend, unfortunately. The RNG team had a family emergency on their end, and I (Aphelion) was busy with RL stuff, so I didn’t catch any of the unofficial broadcasts. I know ThePlatypusKing did some impromptu commentary for a bit, and followed it up with an interview with TonyGeeee! Hoping to get a link up for those soon!

Congratulations to (it’s ya boy) LightsOutAce for taking the ETS down with Scrappy Hour! As one of my personal favorite players, as he directly contributed to my interest in committing to the game when I was getting started, I am always super happy to see him do well. Especially when its with a deck he clearly has but a lot of time into developing and refining. Scrappy Hour combines the “go-wide, take over a board and steal your big creature than kill you with it”-ness of Grenadin’s, with the spicy late game and otherwise mostly unplayable Witching Hour on the top end. Up until this weekend, I could not in good conscious encourage people to craft Witching Hours, but between LoA’s success with it, and Theovermaster/ThatResolves weekend having fun with the card, I now believe it has a home in competitive play.

The other deck that really “wow’d” me this week was Flash2351’s Sentinel Reanimator. I was a big fan of this style of deck when TheSkeeJay broke the list open a few months ago, and played it fairly heavily on ladder. The deck was very capable and always felt like it had a direction to go. You could turn 4 a Great Kiln Titan, and a lot of times that was basically game over. Easily the hardest card to make work was Novaquake Titan, and it seems that Flash identified that issue, replacing it with Lavablood Goliath in the main. Lavablood gives the deck the necessary reach to burn out your opponent to close the game out, or help break up a board stall. Overall, Flash’s take on the archetype looks very streamlined, and I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys these style of “Timmy” decks.

Aetherllama cooked up a spicy number with FTJ Tokens. Justice gave the deck access to Stand Together and Crownwatch Pressgang in the main board, then Vanquish in the side board. My understanding is that this deck has a really great AP Mid matchup, and the cards in the sideboard (namely Flamestoker), help shore up the control matchup. If Hailstorm stays in it’s lull, I could see the deck becoming more popular on ladder, due to its affordability. It only packs 4 Heart of the Vault’s in the main as its legendaries, so its an easy deck to take for a spin.

Now I will pass the torch to ThatResolves:

Hello and welcome to another Meta Monday breakdown! We’ve got some sweet technology for you this week in decks featuring a playset of Witching Hour or Calderan Cradle! First up we have Theovermasters sweetest brew to date in the Argenport Revenge deck! What a way to welcome them to the team by featuring their creation!

3 Dark Return (Set1 #250)
2 Seek Power (Set1 #408)
4 Slumbering Stone (Set1 #255)
4 Tock Tick (Set2 #141)
4 Devour (Set1 #261)
4 Vara’s Favor (Set0 #35)
2 Scheme (Set1 #213)
4 Slay (Set2 #236)
4 Stonepowder Alchemist (Set2 #239)
4 Crownwatch Press-Gang (Set2 #92)

4 The Witching Hour (Set1 #310)
5 Justice Sigil (Set1 #126)
8 Shadow Sigil (Set1 #249)
4 Argenport Banner (Set2 #231)
4 Crest of Vengeance (Set3 #264)
4 Seat of Vengeance (Set0 #55)
1 Watchwing Conscript (Set1002 #9)

It’s a deck with so much play to it and if you’re sick of losing to Skycrag then I’d recommend you pick it up and with all the gummy bears you can stick on the ground. You’ve even got a good match up against time decks, as you can force your opponent to over commit into your Harsh Rule, before you take over with Makto and Witching hour. Let me tell you this is the best Witching Hour deck I’ve ever played (sorry Scrappy Hour), as every unit is capable of reducing the cost by at least two. Oh boy did DWD really give us a treat with the buff to Crownwatch Pressgang, as it is perfect in this deck. Whether being multiple bodies, or even just being able to draw you cards in a pinch, picking up revenging Tock Ticks and bringing you closer to your other revenge units.

4 Levitate (Set1 #190)
3 Seek Power (Set1 #408)
4 Torch (Set1 #8)
1 Bring Down (Set2 #217)
2 Eilyn’s Favor (Set0 #24)
1 Kaleb’s Choice (Set2 #188)
2 Lightning Storm (Set1 #206)
4 Strategize (Set3 #165)
4 Trailblaze (Set2 #111)
2 Vanquish (Set1 #143)
3 Eilyn’s Choice (Set2 #220)
4 Hailstorm (Set1003 #11)
4 Wisdom of the Elders (Set1 #218)
4 Calderan Cradle (Set2 #192)
4 Harsh Rule (Set1 #172)
4 Channel the Tempest (Set1 #244)
1 Fire Sigil (Set1 #1)
3 Justice Sigil (Set1 #126)
4 Primal Sigil (Set1 #187)
4 Cobalt Waystone (Set3 #151)
4 Crest of Fury (Set3 #266)
1 Hooru Banner (Set2 #216)
2 Seat of Fury (Set0 #53)
2 Seat of Glory (Set0 #56)
4 Seat of Order (Set0 #51)

Next up we’ve got a unit less Hooru Control deck splashing for Calderan Cradle as ifs win condition and I guess torch is pretty good too! This deck is sweet to play and though it isn’t super refined right ,yet I think it shows that alternate win cons are great and we can have a peek into how powerful Hooru Control is as a shell. You can eventually win with any old nonsense be it 5/6 echo one drops or an off faction four cost do nothing relic. I really enjoy the play style and surprise dragons are the best.

Thanks for reading see you next week!
