This is Isochron presenting Meta Monday

The following people made this article possible:

As always, if you’d like to contribute data and have your name featured in the article, make sure to submit your games to both the Throne Ladder and Expedition Ladder forms. If your opponent was on an off-meta deck, please just write a little bit of information about it to make my job a little easier. If you have a large data set, you can DM it to /u/NotoriousGHP on Reddit, [TRS] NotoriousGHP#6765 on discord, or email me at [email protected].

This week, we had 236 games submitted for Throne and 207 games submitted for Expedition.

Throne Breakdown

The new format is really starting to come into it’s own with Even Elysian proving itself to be the deck to beat and getting a significant boost from it’s popularity in the ECQ. FTJ Mid-Control has become the de-facto value deck for many metas, and it’s good again in this one. Finally getting a display definitely helped the deck, and the chants themselves are really good given that the player has complete control over how to utilize them.

The top 2 decks from the ECQ only managed to show up in tier 2, but I’m expecting to see more of them in the coming days. Across all formats, reunite is proving itself to be a very great card at enabling redundancy when it comes to drawing powerful units without any major disadvantages. It can be a bit slow at times, but more often than not, it’s possible to cast it when it’s advantageous. But the place where it’s the most apparent is in Xenan, where it can get both the Shadow and the Time Strangers, which are some of the best units from a sheer value perspective in the game. The only thing holding the deck back is that it’s a fair deck in a meta where other decks can do a lot of unfair things.

On the other hand, Combrei aggro is not even running any cards from the new set. But it’s always been the deck that manages to keep every unfair list in check. It has a sufficient density of hosers to prevent the opponent from ever doing something way outside the expected boundaries of a fair game. This makes Combrei aggro incredibly meta dependent, but it’s a very good meta call when there’s a need to beat unfair decks.

The rest of the interest in the meta I have comes from tier 3. Where Rakano midrange, mono time midrange, and JPS control are all represented. These are decks that have been very powerful in their own past metas, so it’s not surprising to see them appear again. I hope that the decks become viable again, since all of their strategies are somewhat unique and valuable to have in small doses.

Expedition Meta

Tier 1

Elysian Fliers 16.5%
FTJ Armory 11%
FTS Sacrifice 10.5%
Argenport Unseen 10%

Tier 2

FTS Strangers 6%
Xenan Strangers 6%
Skycrag Dragons 5%

Tier 3

Jennev Strangers 4%
FPS Dragons 4%
Xenan Elves 3.5%
Stonescar Dragons 2.5%

Expedition Breakdown

FTS sacrifice has taken a back seat in Expedition as we’re seeing a four deck dominated meta for the first time I can recall. I have been playing Eternal practically since open beta started, and I genuinely can’t remember a meta where there were four decks this dominant. This might just be my memory, but something about it feels so weird.

Elysian fliers is the clear front runner owing to it’s incredibly effective strategy due to the various ways it gets to get bigger units up in the air. Armory is back in full force due to the new cards it got in expedition. And the Argenport unseen deck has risen to the occasion and gathered up a ton of meta share. All of these decks are brand new strategies only made possible by the new set, so I would highly encourage everyone to try them out for yourselves. If you have any dust left, this is probably the most fun way to play the game in a completely new way. There are plenty of other highly original decks in expedition, and the format is really starting to come into it’s own.

Tier 2 also has completely distinct lists in the form of Xenan and FTS strangers. Stranger decks are a real competitive force now. I love this format. There are a bunch of good strangers and as many reasons to try them out. And a third stranger deck shows up in tier 3 in the form of Jennev strangers. A completely stranger driven meta is not out of the question, although it probably would not be too healthy for the game. And the final new deck is FPS dragons, which is mostly based around the new dragon that can completely overpower almost any board presence single handedly. Expedition is looking really fun and I can’t wait to see what innovations people will bring to the table when they’re not preparing for a throne ECQ.
